Jean Painlevé

France, 1902 - 1989
Filmmaker and biologist specializing in underwater fauna, he stood out for his scientific documentaries. He is rightly regarded as one of the founding fathers of scientific cinema. First despised by the scientific world, that considers cinema unworthy and not very serious as a scientific observation tool, he is soon noticed by the surrealists and in particular by André Breton, who admires the plastic and evocative vision of his films.
