Toni Catany
Toni Catany was an important figure in contemporary Catalan photography. Self-taught and based in Barcelona from 1960 until his death, Catany developed a highly personal style centered on still lifes, portraits, flowers, and the male human body. His work is characterized by an elegant use of light, shadow, and reflection which created timeless, sensual, and contemplative images.
Known for his experimental approach to technique, Catany reinterpreted alternative photographic processes, particularly the calotype, developing his own color variations. His photographs often evoke classical sculpture and painting, especially in his celebrated studies of the male nude, which explore beauty, desire, and intimacy beyond documentary or photojournalistic traditions.
Travel was a constant source of inspiration. Catany photographed Mediterranean cultures, architecture, and archaeological sites across Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, producing images that blend documentation with a deeply personal, poetic vision. His work was exhibited internationally, beginning with his first exhibition in 1972. He received numerous honors, including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1991) and Spain’s National Photography Award (2001).
