Jacques Sonck: Portraits

Belgian photographer Jacques Sonckcreates analog black and white portraits in the street and in the studio, always on the lookout for the extraordinary. Regardless of age, gender, or background, he is attracted to individuals who stand out in the crowd for an anomaly in their appearance, outgoing attitude, or style of dress. His work can be seen as an eccentric sample of Flemish society from the 1970s. Seen as a whole, his comic, tragic, melancholic and joyful portraits form an in-depth study of the human condition. “In a way, I'm trying to make a document about the beings who live at that time and in that part of the world. It's diversity that interests me. Maybe through my work people learn to see differently, with an empathetic curiosity towards my subjects. We are all different, that is my leitmotif, and that we are proud of it is the message. Jacques Sonck is represented by the FIFTY ONE gallery, Antwerp.
