Kayapo twins in the village of Kubenkrãnken, in southern Pará state. Their land serves as a crucial barrier to deforestation advancing from the south. Over hundreds of years, the Kayapó fought Portuguese colonisers and their tribal neighbours. More recently, they have resisted illegal loggers and miners plundering their land. Now, they have to face the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro who wants to open up Brazil’s indigenous lands to mining, farming and other commercial activity.
