Bruce Davidson

USA, 1933

Bruce Davidson is an award-winning photographer who was born in 1933 in Illinois. He has worked for Life magazine and has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1958. As a pioneer of social documentary photography, he focusses on issues such as racism, immigration, civil rights, violence and poverty. He is especially known through his photographs of the poor for whom the ‘american dream’ seems unattainable. What makes his photographs special, is the way he photographs from a personal perspective and puts an emphasis on his relationship with the photographed subject. He was heavily influenced by his teacher Josef Albers at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University and his lifelong mentor Henri Cartier-Bresson.
