Anton Corbijn was born in the Netherlands, but lived and worked in London for thirty years. He is best known for his black and white photographs of actors, musicians and artists, though he cannot be seen as a celebrity photographer. Rather as someone who captures personalities that intrigue him. Some of his photographs have become iconic images of modern pop culture.
Besides his photographic oeuvre, Corbijn also designed stages, directed music videos and directs feature films these days. In 2007 he made his film debut with ‘Control’, about the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. In 2014 his film ‘A Most Wanted Man’ was released and in 2015 his new film ‘Life’ – about the friendship between actor James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock – had its premiere.
The artist had major solo exhibitions at institutions such as FotoMuseum, Antwerp (BE), S.M.A.K., Ghent (BE), Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (DE), Groninger Museum, Groningen (NL), Münchner Stadtmuseum, Munich (DE), Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen (DE), Museum Moderne Kunst, Dresden (DE), Foam, Amsterdam (NL), Museum Bochum, Bochum (DE), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (NL), Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (IT), Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna (IT), Castello di Rivoli, Turin (IT), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow (RU).
His work has been included in group shows at ICA, London (GB), Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (JP), Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam (NL), amongst many others.
In 2015 Anton Corbijn, who now lives and works in The Hague, had a solo exhibition at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, which later traveled to Amerika Haus in Berlin.
