Without a thief, Margaret Watkins would not be even a foot note in the field of photography, her works removed from the seventeen room Victorian house in Glasgow’s West End and consigned to the City rubbish depot. I had spotted strange goings-on at the rear of her home. A man was furtively bringing box after box to a taxi lurking in the lane behind. I knew nothing of the house, or its occupants. I had moved into the area shortly before. I phoned a neighbour, who gave me a name: Margaret Watkins, “you’ll find her number in the telephone directory”.
