This fall, Antwerp celebrates the long awaited reopening of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) in Antwerp. The museum opens its doors to the public on 24 September 2022 after a 10 year closing during which it has undergone a radical rebuilding and expansion.

For the occasion, 28 Vignon Street presents an online exhibition of photographs that the German artist Friederike von Rauch took of the museum in 2011. For her series ‘In Secret’ (2009-13) von Rauch explored European museums after the regular opening hours, in serenity and solitude.

"In the summer of 2011, I traveled to Antwerp to photograph the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, which was already closed for restoration works. After the "Neues Museum" in Berlin, rebuilt by David Chipperfield, it was a great pleasure to walk through those big, wide halls and see the paintings that were already on the floor and lying in the restoration workshops. Everything was ready for the move of the works.
I was there when a painting was taken down in the beautiful Rubens Hall with many men reinforcements.
Rarely have I seen museum people so excited.
What does the frame look like from behind?
I then photographed the empty space, in love with the gray velvet covering of the hall.
I fondly remember the wonderful experience of walking through the deserted museum."
