Time. Years. They go by, and fast. It is already ten years ago that I had the immense pleasure to curate a show honoring Serge Gainsbourg. It was the 20th anniversary of his passing and the often emotional reactions to the public figure of Gainsbourg were still very strong. From Paris, over Antwerp, to NYC. Today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of his death, being well aware that his legacy is alive as ever. It is this particular and iconic image by William Klein that I’d like to focus on for today’s homage. Klein’s portrait of Serge Gainsbourg for the vinyl of ‘Love on the Beat’. Gainsbourg and Klein had quite a lot in common, from their Eastern European Jewish background, their non-conformist attitude in the art-and public scene, their peculiar sense of humour to their sensitivity and knowledge of art and painting in particular. They greatly appreciated each other. And when Gainsbourg asked Klein to portray him for his new album, he had a very outspoken idea of what kind of image he wanted. Ever defying, challenging the right-thinking audience, slightly provocative, flirting with the boundaries of what could be shocking. Klein and Gainsbourg worked together in the sixties for ‘Mr Freedom’. This new encounter opened up a new visual collaboration that would turn out to be iconic, Gainsbourg’s come back, as he badly wanted it.The rest is history. Both Gainsbourg and Klein were born in 1928. William is still amongst us, having immortalized Serge in a way that is neither Gainsbourg nor Gainsbarre, yet another him. A complex, sensitive, shy, provocative and talented artist. To all of them: ‘Mes hommages’. - Roger Szmulewicz, owner of Gallery FIFTY ONE
