Araki was an avid admirer of Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jean-Luc Godard. His own career began in 1964 with pictures of children in the city, then Araki photographed his own honeymoon. From these photos emerged the legendary book Sentimental Journey. In the 1970s, Araki broke away from press and reportage photography and began to show the interpersonal. He documented the abyss of the soul and quickly found access to eroticism. At this time he began to publish his photographs in the avant-garde comic magazine Garo, among others. Araki invented the term "photographic ego", which signifies an interaction between fiction, truth and desire. Araki is an ambitious observer of the environment and photographs daily. In Japan, some of his photos are censored for reasons of "obscenity". This made the artist pick up ironically on the 'black bars' of censorship in some of his books, also 'censoring' his books with paint and brush. One of his most famous models is the Icelandic singer Björk. Among other things, Araki photographed for her 1996 album Telegram. Araki has published over 350 books.
