Carrie Mae Weems

Carrie Mae Weems (American, born April 20, 1953 in Portland) is a contemporary photographer. She obtained a BA in Visual Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in 1981 and a Master of Photography from the University of California in 1984. From that date until 1987, Weems studied folklore at UC Berkeley. She is best known for her installations that use photographs, text, captions and audio recordings.

Weems' work often confronts the audience with the problems of racism, identity and gender from a personal and historical point of view.
